The wolf-human bonds all started 200 years ago. An infant boy was adopted by a wolf. She raised him like her own whelp, with her own whelps, and he grew up, and slowly grew closer and closer to the wolf who raised him. As the years passed many more children and wolves were drawn together, though they weren't raised together, and mental bonds started forming. After many generations it became clear to the wolves that their survive depended upon human bonds and, though many disagreed with it at the time, the all gathered together and bonded, one by one, with a human.
Every time a wolf is born, a human is born with the wolf and is bonded to it through the spirit. This bond gives the human extra gifts among the rest. Greater beauty for some, greater strength, keener senses, greater agility, and so on. Each wolf came to learn that, with the accidental, or murderous, death of their bonded they, themselves could not survive. It became imperative that they protect their bonded, even those wolves who had never met them - because yes, they had been that foolish then.
They began showing themselves, seeking out their bonded, and the bonds strengthened. With each generation came a new strength for the wolves. It also became common for humans to mark their wolves in some way. With constantly renewed paint, or with fabric or jeweled trinkets. They always wanted someone to know 'this wolf is mine.'
